A via ferrata is a protected climbing route essentially. Made simpler with the aid of a steel cable which runs along a route and is fixed to the rock every few meters and works as a ‘lifeline’. With a via ferrata kit you will secure yourself to the cable, limiting any fall. Running parallel to it are metal steps, pegs and even at times you can fine carved stone ledges to facilitate the climb. It’s easy to follow and a great way to tackle otherwise impassable cliffs and ledges.
For this reason, via ferratas allow us to undertake potentially dangerous routes without the risks associated with unprotected scrambling or rock climbing. It requires very little equipment although you need to be prepared for some exposure and have a good head for heights. There are, however, routes of different grades of difficulty, so we will tailor the most suitable route for you so you can enjoy a personalised experience at your pace.
Explore Spain Now will provide you with all the equipment you need for a day on a via ferrata route. This consists of a harness, a shock absorber and a helmet. You will need to bring either approach shoes, trail shoes or trainers, some water and sun protection. It’s a good idea to come with some snacks also. Don’t forget your GoPro!
